Known as “The Pope of Weightlifting” Ivan Abadjiev was a legendary weightlifting coach who from 1968-2000 produced not only Olympic and World Champions in the sport of weightlifting.
Abadjiev’s revolutionary training style was known for its intense emphasis on maximum intensity and extreme specificity. His sometimes controversial methods helped propel Bulgaria from being a relatively unknown presence in international athletics to one of the great powerhouses in strength sport.
Over the years, a culture evolved out of his authoritarian coaching known as “крушка”
(Pronounced: krush-ka), which does not have an English equivalent. However, the idea of крушка came from when, usually more senior, athletes needed a break from the extreme demands of 95%+ intensity training every day despite that being what Abadjiev demanded. What followed was that athletes would attempt to deceive Abadjiev into believing they were lifting more weight than they actually were in order to take some much-needed rest. This could include small things like hiding when you were supposed to be doing your top set, or simply lying about how much weight you had just snatched and having your buddies back you up.
On the more technically challenging side of крушка, skilled weightlifters would supposedly misload one side of a barbell. Knowing that Abadjiev would always watch them from the same spot, they would load a barbell such that it looked like they were about to clean and jerk their max, however, they would take off ~10% from the side facing away from Abadjiev, in order to make the lift easier on themselves. This impressive feet required the athlete to quickly recalibrate the center of mass of an object that would soon be over their heads.
This shirt celebrates the man and the myth of the revolutionary and innovative strength coach in the colors of his native Bulgaria.
